This page is for Club Officials and members . Click here if you are new to sailing to find out more about Discover Sailing.

“Discover Sailing” as a brand name was systematically selected by the gemba market research from a range of other options currently being used by some states and countries. It represents the personality, values and attributes of a sport that has a diverse range of options to offer to people of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities. The word ‘sailing’ was preferred by Australians over yachting. ‘Discover’ conveys the exploration of the sport for those who have not previously been involved.

The corporate Yachting Australia and State Association image remains the governance and organisational level conduit with Discover Sailing dedicated to the programs and communications that attract participants to the sport through Clubs.

Clubs are encouraged to use and display the Discover Sailing logo. It can be used on their website as an access point to information for people interested in finding out more about the benefits of being involved at a Club, for both sailing and social purposes.

Only Yachting Australia accredited Discover Sailing Training Centres may use the Discover Sailing logo and name to promote  their courses.

Club Communications & Considerations

The Discover Sailing Program is entirely optional for Clubs to adopt.
Clubs wanting to participate in it should consider doing the following;
  • Being part of an Australia wide day on Sunday 27 October 2013, to create greater awareness and marketing power, or simply offering their own Discover Sailing Days as often as they like.
  • Delivering the Discover Sailing Learn to Sail Programs in either Dinghies or Keelboats (if are not already)
  • Delivering the Discover Sailing Experience in either Dinghies or Keelboats
  • Ensuring the welcome they provide potential new participants and the information they have for them will meet their expectations.
  • Appointing Discover Sailing Hosts (gemba called them “Ask me anything” people). These are people dedicated to welcoming new participants to the sport at local clubs.
  • Ensuring external signage and the front page of their website welcomes visitors, and even displays the Discover Sailing logo.
  • Updating their Club Profile in MyClub to ensure visitors from the Discover Sailing website view up to date and relevant information.
  • Additionally Clubs wanting to optimise their chances of success in increasing membership should consider the gemba Report

Program Costs

The Discover Sailing Program development is fully funded by the Australian Sports Commission, as one of the three priorities in Yachting Australia’s Pathways to Success Program. There is no fee for Clubs to participate.

Clubs who deliver the Discover Sailing Learn to Sail programs in either dinghies or keelboats will continue to pay the fees associated with it, under a similar structure as has always existed for previous YATCs. (Yachting Australia Training Centres). Clubs will also pay a small fee for any of the marketing material, such as banners, decals and brochures they order from the Yachting Australia Online Shop to cover the cost of production and postage.

Thank You
